My younger sister Darla just had a birthday and for her cake we went with a movie theme, one of our favorites, Mad Max! The cake turned out awesome and I thought I’d share some pictures and talk about how we made it!
The cake was made up of four layers, two vegan chocolate cake layers and two vegan brownie layers, just like (minus one layer) my mom’s synchronized swimmer cake! I used the same chocolate cake recipe as my chocolate cake doughnuts except I made two batches to make two 9” round cakes. For the brownie layers I used this go-to brownie recipe but didn’t half the batch or use a cornstarch egg like I did for my mom’s cake. For the frosting I used my vegan buttercream recipe. The taste was amazing and all layers held together great!
My dad and I worked on this cake’s decorations together. For the War Boys on poles, like in Mad Max Fury Road, I took a movie still and traced a few of the guys on poles in Adobe Illustrator. I wanted them to be simple vector and grayscale. For the emblem I did the same thing and traced it in Adobe Illustrator then printed everything out on thick card stock paper and cut it all out. We painted some wooden skewers (and a popsicle stick) black for the poles/scaffolding and painted the emblem silver then lightly touched some black paint onto it to add some more texture. Everything was hot glued together then we added some mylar pieces and used a lighter to curl and warp it. A similar look could be achieved with tin foil or some sort of silver paper. You can really just have fun with it and put on whatever feels right!
For the birthday candles on poles we took black polka-dot candles and used a soldering iron to melt a grove into the back big enough for a skewer. Then placed the skewer in the grove and took another candle, lit it, and let the wax melt, dripping it onto the grove and skewer, sealing it all up.
Once the cake was frosted and the parts were ready we put it together and wrote “WHAT A LOVELY B-DAY” in black icing as reference to “WHAT A LOVELY DAY”. We then lit the candles, got the birthday girl and had a whole lot of fun! I highly recommend this silver food mist if you want to be truly shiny and chrome--we totally loved it!
I hope you guys enjoyed this post. If you’re thinking of doing a Mad Max cake for you or someone else I highly recommend it! I can’t wait for the next birthday, and the next cake! Have a great week, see you on Friday!
